EDITOR’S NOTE ON THE SECOND EDITION
The Selected Works of Deng Xiaoping (1975-1982) was published in
1983. With the approval of the author, the second edition is now issued and
entitled the Selected Works of Deng Xiaoping (Volume II).
The present book includes 14 additional articles, most of which are
published here for the first time in English. “Opening Speech at the Twelfth
National Congress of the Communist Party of China”, which appeared in
the first edition, has been included in the Selected Works of Deng Xiaoping
(Volume III). This book reflects some of the author’s main ideas concerning
the theory of building socialism with Chinese characteristics, which were set
forth between mid-1970s and early 1980s. It contains 60 articles.
In the second edition, some of the transcriptions of the original
presentations have been edited by the author, a few changes have been made
in wording and punctuation of the text, and a few notes have been added to
the book.
